Brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) may result when the head violently hits an object or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue. In either case, symptoms of TBI can be mild, moderate or extremely severe depending upon the degree of damage. Symptoms may range from loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, behavioral or mood changes, vomiting or nausea, convulsions, slurred speech, and loss of coordination among others.
Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital offers comprehensive, personalized rehabilitation services for patients who have experienced traumatic brain injury. Your rehabilitation experience at Desert Canyon will be designed to ease the impact that results from brain injury and to help you and your family adapt physically and emotionally to necessary lifestyle changes.
At Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital, brain injury patients will receive rehabilitation that is individually tailored to their specific needs in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, psychology/psychiatry, social and community support. The degree of disability depends upon the severity of the injury, the location of the injury and the general health and age of the patient. It is not uncommon for brain injury patients to experience problems with thinking, memory and reasoning; sensory processing (sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell); communication, and behavior or mental health (anxiety, depression, aggression and social inappropriateness). Recent research has demonstrated that primary and secondary brain damage may be reduced through aggressive rehabilitation designed to improve long-term recovery of function.
Our programs will be specifically designed to meet your needs. The goal of the program will be to work together as a team (you, your family and our staff) to develop a comprehensive therapy program specifically designed to meet your individualized therapy goals. We will work with you, every step of the way, to assist you in adapting and in coping with the physical and emotional changes so that you can achieve optimal living.
